  • I've got 11 hours and 38 minutes to study for my Immunology final. Fittingly, I have a cold.

I think I've given up on doing well in this class; but every now and then I get a spark of drive and inspiration that lasts about 45 minutes--good enough to cover half a lecture. If I really cared about my GPA (and my health), I'd drop this class, get a good nights sleep, start writing my paper on Frost for Thursday and get on with my life. But I'm only three courses away from finishing my biology concentration. If I really wanted, I could take all of them next semester and be done; then senior year, I could be a complete hippy, read poetry, eat, and sleep.

  • Report: Stephen Hawking to divorce

Fri Oct 20, 3:21 PM ET

Renowned astrophysicist and best-selling author Stephen Hawking is getting a divorce, according to media reports Friday.

British newspapers reported he and his wife, Elaine, have lodged divorce papers at Cambridge County Court.

Graham Jones, the office manager at the court, said he could not comment on family cases.

Hawking's university spokeswoman, Judith Croasdell, declined to comment on the reports.

Hawking has been married to his wife, Elaine, 55, for 11 years. Hawking divorced in 1991 from his first wife, Jane, with whom he has three children.

The mathematics professor at the University of Cambridge has done groundbreaking work on black holes and the origins of the universe, making him one of the best-known theoretical physicists of his generation.

The 64-year-old scientist, author of the best seller "A Brief History of Time," is almost completely paralyzed by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease. He communicates with the help of a voice synthesizer, which was designed by his wife's previous husband.

[See bold] Dude, I want to know how that happened. Sounds like an episode of Grey's Anatomy to me.

    AP-Puppies Killed

Fire in truck kills 60 puppies

LOWELL, Mass. (AP) - Sixty puppies being taken to pet stores perished when the truck they were in caught fire.

The driver saw smoke coming from the trailer and pulled over in Lowell, Massachusetts, a Boston suburb. Firefighters came, but by then flames had engulfed the trailer, and they couldn't save the dogs.

State police say the puppies were between eight and 12 weeks old, were a variety of breeds, and were being taken to pet stores in the Northeast.

The driver and his passenger escaped injury. Investigators say the truck was owned by a Missouri-based company that supplies puppies to stores. Police believe a malfunctioning fan in the trailer may have started the fire, and no charges are being filed.
